How to Choose a Cotton Drawstring Bag Size

Define which dimensions you are ordering

Specify finished flat outside width × height, with units, and say whether the height includes the cord channel. For a bag with a gusset, also record the side or bottom depth and construction. A cut fabric panel, a sewn bag and its usable internal space have different dimensions.

Measure the whole packed set

1. Measure the product as it will actually be delivered, including its protective packaging.
2. For several items in one bag, arrange them together first, then record the overall shape.
3. Identify hard corners, sharp parts and items that cannot bend. Acrylic pieces and pin badges may need individual protection; extra bag space does not replace it.
4. Explain how the bag will be used: frequent opening, one-handed removal, or a partially open closure.

A boxed gift and the same gift without its box may need different bags. Use the final packed version for the fit test.

Why there is no universal add-a-few-centimetres rule

Item depth uses part of a flat bag’s width and height. Seams, the cord channel, fabric stiffness and the gathering at the mouth also affect fit. A single allowance cannot cover every pouch construction.

Start with a sample of the same construction and similar fabric. Check that the item goes in easily, the bottom corners are not strained, the cord closes as intended, and the contents come out without snagging. A paper mock-up can help explain the shape but cannot verify how a sewn cotton pouch closes.

Approve the fit and print together

• Record finished dimensions, the measuring method and agreed tolerances.
• Keep the packed-item measurements, item count and fit-test photographs with the specification.
• Confirm lining, cord construction and the intended remaining opening after tightening.
• Keep important artwork away from the cord channel, folds and gathered areas; approve its position with the bag filled.
• If fit must be retained after washing, agree the fabric finish and washing conditions, then measure a washed sample. Cotton does not mean shrink-free.

Canvas describes a fabric construction, not a guarantee of cotton fibre content. Specify fibre composition and fabric weight separately; neither fabric weight nor nominal bag size proves a carrying-load rating.
